Black Ops II Save, Checkpoint, and Mission Select Guide
Understand automatic campaign checkpoints, Save and Quit, completed-mission replay, difficulty selection, and the difference between practice and campaign-state choices.
What the official manual confirms
The official Black Ops II manual says campaign progress is saved automatically at checkpoints. The pause menu includes Save and Quit, and Mission Select can replay completed missions at a selected difficulty.
| Function | Intended use | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic checkpoint | Resume recent campaign progress | That every second or choice has already saved |
| Save and Quit | Leave through the supported pause-menu flow | That closing the application replaces this step |
| Mission Select | Replay a completed mission | That replay automatically restores a preferred story state |
| Difficulty selection | Practice or repeat at a chosen setting | That trophies ignore their stated conditions |
Protect a choice-focused playthrough
Before replaying a mission tied to an important decision, record the current campaign branch and the result you want to preserve. Use the normal campaign continuation for the canonical playthrough. Treat Mission Select as a controlled replay surface unless the game clearly reports that a new outcome has changed current progress.
Strike Force success and failure can affect campaign events, according to the same manual. Save-path questions should therefore be separated from tactical questions: a mission can be replayable while its prior result still matters to the ongoing story.
Troubleshoot a missing resume point
Wait for a checkpoint indicator before leaving, use Save and Quit, and return through the same profile. If progress is not present, verify profile, storage and version before replaying a long section. Do not use an unrelated save download; it can overwrite choices, unlocks or trophy eligibility.
For a clean test, note the mission name, checkpoint description, selected difficulty and profile before quitting. Resume once before attempting an alternate branch. If the expected checkpoint loads, the supported save path is working. Keep trophy cleanup and story experimentation in separate sessions when possible, and read each trophy's version-specific condition before assuming Mission Select will satisfy it.
